On the occasion of World Heart Day, Dobriša Cesarić Elementary School organised a humanitarian event in cooperation with the “Veliko srce malom srcu” Association.
The ceremony was attended by Deputy Mayor Irena Martinek; Dražen Belina, MD, Specialist in Paediatric Surgery; Prim. Vlado Drkulec, MD, MSc, Specialist in Paediatrics and Pulmonology; Prof. Prim. Andrea Šimić Klarić, MD, PhD; Dr Helena Tesari; Dr Magdalena Dokoza; Mrs Drenka Vuković; as well as school staff, students, parents and guests.
Our school is a place where we learn and grow, but above all, it is a place where we live the values of togetherness, compassion and empathy. The event that occurred at the beginning of the year deeply affected us all, but at the same time reminded us just how important humanity, quick thinking and composure can be.
On that day, our teacher Renata Drežnjak, through her swift response, compassion and remarkable composure, saved the life of our student, Bojan Vuković. Her courage and care ensured that, following the extraordinary and wholehearted assistance of Dr Drkulec, Dr Tesari and the entire medical team, and after the fight for his life at Požega Hospital, Bojan could begin the demanding journey from Osijek to Zagreb.
Thanks to the exceptional dedication of the medical team and a successful operation performed by Dr Belina at the University Hospital Centre Zagreb, Bojan is now back in the classroom with us, smiling and full of life. For all of us, this is the greatest victory and the greatest source of joy.
After everything we experienced, we were immensely proud to accept the invitation of the “Veliko srce malom srcu” Association to work together. This initiative is much more than simply raising funds; it is our shared expression of gratitude, support and solidarity with all children living and fighting with congenital heart defects.
We would like to thank the Association for its initiative, our teacher Renata for her extraordinary courage, the doctors who fought for our Bojan, and all of you whose participation demonstrates that our school truly has a big heart.
We would also like to thank our student cooperative “Slap”, its coordinator Maja Burić, and all the teachers and school staff who helped organise this truly meaningful humanitarian event and prepared the accompanying programme.
